Course Overview This course is ideal for anyone with some screenwriting experience wanting to enhance their prospects of professional advancement in the current market. If you dream of making your name as a screenwriter with projects in the UK, Europe or Hollywood, then this is the course for you. It’s the chance to refocus your screenwriting career, to broaden your range to become responsible for the work of others or to gain confidence to launch a project of your own. Generating ideas Identifying what makes for a compelling narrative and how to find the universal elements of your story…tapping into an abundance of ideas and how to develop them creatively. Writing The art of bringing your writing to life … engaging emotions... evolving a personal style … maintaining pace and rhythm. Editing The importance of structure … the need to think visually … the redrafting process. The Industry Who to approach in the industry … polishing your pitch… preparation for meetings. Key Content Learning will be centred on developing, generating and writing feature film treatments, and will draw on students’ own experiences in the working environment. Content will be influenced by the participants and will be negotiated during the course delivery. Generic themes will include: • Generating and developing ideas • Packaging the idea • Story structures • Re-writing When, Where and How Much? This eight-week course will commence on 15-16 October 2010 with a two-day creative retreat in Bournemouth at BU’s Executive Business Centre. The creative retreat will be followed by seven weeks of supported online study. Based on the Lansdowne Campus in the heart of Bournemouth, the Executive Business Centre is a contemporary building offering the latest business accommodation; from an e-library and bespoke study areas, to executive dining and Caffé Liscio coffee concession. The cost of this course is £800. Information on available discounts can be found at Issue 2, March 2010 The Media School at BU Writing the Feature Film Treatment http://mixtape.bournemouth.ac.uk/feesfunding.html Course Delivery During the two-day creative retreat, you will explore a specific area of interest with a range of like-minded media professionals and input from academics and guest lecturers. After your retreat you will have the opportunity to further develop your knowledge with seven weeks of supported online study during which you will take part in a variety of online exercises, forums and projects which will be collated for assessment in the online environment. You will have the option of undertaking an academic assignment and on its successful completion will gain 20 Masters level credits. If you go on to participate in and pass more of our courses you can build your own tailored postgraduate qualification, accruing credit towards a PG Cert (3 courses), a PG Dip (6 courses) and a Masters (8 courses).
